How To Control Termites In Your Home

Termites can destroy your home if you don't get rid of them quickly. They feed off of the wood surrounding and throughout your home, which can cause hollowed wood and damage the structure of your home, leaving you with an expensive repair bill. Getting rid of these pests is a must. See below for tips on how to control termites and keep your home safe.

Look For Signs Of A Problem

Check around your home for sawdust or small holes in any wood around your house such as decking, wood siding, windows or doors. Knock on the wood and listen for a hollow sound which could indicate a problem.

Check the area for actual termites, which could indicate an infestation. Termites usually tunnel to the food source and then back to their colony, so if they are highly visible, it could be a big problem.

Stop Feeding Them

Termites feed on wood, so you can't get rid of the wood on your home, but you can get rid of anything around your home such as wood piles or mulch. Also have old rotting or decaying trees removed from your yard where these and other pests could be using for food. Get rid of this free food that could be enticing these or other pests.

Kill The Bugs

Begin using a pesticide around your home that will kill termites. Be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions on how to use the pesticide. Spray it where you have noticed signs of termites. You can also use a piece of cardboard to trick the bugs. When they begin to migrate their way to the cardboard, burn the piece of cardboard to kill them.

Seal Holes

Small holes in the wood surrounding your home could be where termites are entering and eating the wood. Spray a pesticide inside these holes, then seal the holes using a silicone caulking. Keep an eye on these areas and repeat the process.
